A 7 GB library on my Mac became a 14 GB library in Dropbox. The problem is that Dropbox can't tell the difference between an alias folder and a real folder, so it uploads, syncs and stores images in both folders. An upgraded iPhoto library will contain an alias folder called Originals linking to the Masters folder. Specifically, new versions of iPhoto store original versions of photos in a folder called Masters, whereas older versions stored them in a folder called Originals. It turns out the problem was my iPhoto libraries, which had been incrementally upgraded from older versions of iPhoto, and contained alias folders. I got a warning that my 50 GB Dropbox was 100% full, yet the Dropbox folder on my Mac was only showing 38 GB in size. I sync some of my iPhoto libraries between Macs using Dropbox. IPLM has once again proven to be an indispensable app. Just be sure not to run both versions at the same time - quit version 3 before running version 4 and vice versa. The two versions use a different naming convention for preference and cache files, so both versions can be used on the same Mac (if you upgraded from version 3 to version 4, your preference files from version 3 are still there).

I decided to split the one monolithic library up, and used iPLM to copy off the old iPhoto library into the new ones. This might sound corny, but this program saved my most valuables and time. Not wanting to individually copy all the masters and recreate iPhoto for ~40K pictures, i scoured for a solution. PROBLEM: because of disk corruption, there were parts of the library and pictures that couldn't be read and could fix with iPhoto - and therefore could not Copy the library to new drive! New SSD and a $20 CabletoGo SATA drive adapter (AWESOME and Great value BTW!) and I could get to my old drive which had the iPhoto Library on it. after a bunch of steps to get it back up, still lots of hard drive errors that even after repair still issues. Well my 2.5 year MBP started having issues - got real sluggish, started doing funky things and then it crashed. I use Backblaze online backup(but hadnt backed up in 4 weeks with lots of photos uploaded - not to mention the chunked up way you would need to download iPhoto components to restore - or pay the $189 fee to have files prepped and shipped - glad the feature is there but.), but my NAS solution at home was not so great and always had issues with Time Machine so no local backup. My situation: 280GB iPhoto Library with ~40K photos and movies sitting on my MBP.
